Stay hydrated. Carry enough water for your full route — don't rely on finding somewhere to buy it mid-shift. Drink consistently throughout, not just when you feel thirsty.
Wear the right clothing. Light-coloured, breathable fabrics help your body regulate temperature when you're in and out of the vehicle. Dark or heavy clothing traps heat quickly on warm days.
What are the most important road safety rules for couriers?
The basics matter more when you're doing this every day. Follow the Highway Code, stick to speed limits, and adjust your speed for the conditions — wet roads, ice, and low visibility all demand more stopping distance than you might leave by default.
Your seatbelt goes on before you move, every time. And your phone stays down while you're driving. If you're using the Copilot app for navigation, mount your phone before you start the route. Picking it up while moving isn't worth the risk or the fine.
How should couriers handle poor weather conditions?
Increase your following distance, slow down earlier than feels necessary, and give cyclists and pedestrians more room than usual. Every time you step away from your vehicle — even for a 30-second doorstep drop — turn off the engine, take your keys, and lock the doors. Leaving a running, unlocked vehicle is one of the most common ways couriers lose their car on shift. It can also void your insurance.
Keep parcels and personal items out of sight. Don't leave bags visible on seats. Park in well-lit areas where you can. It only takes a few seconds to make your vehicle a less obvious target.
